Guidance

Driving during a lightning storm is not recommended.

When you are in a car during a lightning storm, there are several precautions you should take to stay safe.

– Assess and if hazardous, pull off the roadway at a distance safe from passing traffic.

– Activate the hazards lights.

– Turn off the engine.

– Shut all windows and avoid touching the windows.

The vehicle is grounded, which means that even if lightning strikes, the electrical charge will travel through the vehicle to the ground via the tires.

While a car provides some protection from lightning, it’s important to follow these guidelines.T

Stay inside the vehicle

The metal body of a car provides a safe space during a lightning storm. Avoid getting out of the car unless it’s an emergency situation.

Close windows and doors

Keep all windows and doors closed to prevent lightning from entering the vehicle. This helps maintain the integrity of the car’s metal structure.T

Avoid contact with metal

Do not touch any metal surfaces inside the car, including door handles, steering wheels, or electronic devices plugged into the car’s charging ports. Lightning can travel through the metal framework of the car, and contact with metal can increase the risk of injury.T

Don’t park under trees or power lines

When seeking shelter in a car, avoid parking under trees, near power lines, or any tall objects that may attract lightning or be prone to falling during a storm.T

Minimize phone use

Lightning can cause power surges, which may damage electronic devices. Minimize the use of cell phones, radios, and other electronic devices while inside the car during a lightning storm.T

Keep hands in lap and feet together

To reduce the risk of electric shock in the event of a lightning strike, keep your hands in your lap and your feet together.

This minimizes the potential for current to travel through your body.T

Avoid wet surfaces

If the car becomes wet from rain, avoid touching wet surfaces inside the car. Moisture can conduct electricity, increasing the risk of injury.T

Stay alert and drive with caution

Lightning storms can cause reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions. Stay focused, reduce speed, and use extra caution while driving. If the conditions become too dangerous, find a safe location to pull over until the storm passes.

Remember, while being in a car is generally safer during a lightning storm compared to being outside, it’s important to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.

If you have concerns about the safety of your car due to lightning strikes or severe weather conditions, consider finding a secure building to take shelter in until the storm subsides.
