Expect the unexpected
I visited Rome in 2006 and spent time exploring the Roman Forum, back when you could still wander freely among the ancient ruins. Sadly, that kind of access isn’t possible today. It was a sweltering summer afternoon, and I remember the sky shifting as dark, heavy clouds began to roll in.
In the photo I took, you can see the sky turning ominous, a clear warning of what was coming. Not long after, as I approached the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, the storm broke. A bolt of lightning struck the sidewalk just 20 meters (about 65 feet) from where I stood. It was a jolt, one of those moments that leaves a lasting mark.
Memories of the day
That photo now hangs on my wall at home. Every time I glance at it, I’m reminded of that sudden storm, the raw power of nature, and how close I came to being part of a very different story.
