Top Things to Do in Philadelphia for a Memorable Weekend
Reading Terminal Market: A Food Lover’s Paradise

Located in the heart of downtown, Reading Terminal Market is a bustling food market featuring over 80 vendors, offering a variety of delicious eats.
- What to Try:
- Cheesesteaks: The iconic Philly cheesesteak is a must. My favorite was from By George, located on the right-hand side as you enter from the main street. The steak, cheese, and sauce combo was unbeatable. It felt an authentic experience here. Others were too ‘touristy.’
- Termini Bros Pastries: For those with a sweet tooth, their beautifully crafted pastries are irresistible. The cupcakes were my favorite.
- Pro Tip:
Look for stalls with locals in line, they usually have the best food! - Don’t Miss:
Snap a photo with Philbert the Pig, the market’s charity mascot in the food hall area. Drop a coin into his mouth and guess where it comes out.

Liberty Bell Center: A Symbol of Freedom

No visit to Philadelphia is complete without a stop at the Liberty Bell Center. This iconic bell, with its famous crack, represents freedom and independence.
- Quick facts:
- The bell once hung in the steeple of Independence Hall and was rung for significant events.
- Free entry with no ticket required, but expect a security screening.
- Why visit:
The center provides a detailed history of the bell and its symbolism over the centuries.

Independence Hall: Birthplace of American Democracy

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Independence Hall is where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and signed. So, it’s worth a visit.
- What to know:
- Much of the building’s exterior and interior remains authentic to its 18th-century origins.
- The surrounding Independence National Historical Park enhances the historic charm of the area.
- Security screenings are required before entry.
- You will need to book a tour here with the rangers. My guess is so all your details are captured ‘in case’ someone does ‘something.’
- Don’t miss:
The wooden steeple, though replaced in 1828, retains its historical integrity.

Independence Seaport Museum and Historic Ships

Explore Philadelphia’s maritime history at the Independence Seaport Museum and its historic ships.
- Highlights:
- USS Olympia: The oldest steel warship afloat, dating back to 1895. Inside it has a lounge next to a canon. So that is interesting.
- USS Becuna: A WWII-era submarine moored alongside. You’ll find the propellers and a torpedo to boot next to the submarine.
- Across the river, view the USS New Jersey, a battleship capable of firing car-sized shells. It’s a monster. Funnily enough moored in New Jersey.

Rocky Steps: Iconic Pop Culture Landmark

Fans of the Rocky movies will love visiting the famous steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
- Why visit:
- Climbing all 72 steps feels like a victory. Don’t forget to strike the classic Rocky pose at the top!
- The Rocky statue at the base is a great photo op.
- Bonus experience:
Some days, you might hear street performers playing the Rocky theme song, adding a magical touch to the moment. I know it did for me, it made my day.
Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Visit to Philadelphia
- Stay downtown: The historic district is compact, walkable, and filled with attractions. North of the city is not for you. It’s a but sketchy.
- Be aware: Like many cities, Philadelphia has areas with visible homelessness and drug use. Stick to tourist-friendly neighborhoods and avoid venturing north of downtown. I saw multiple drug affected people, doped out and syringes on the street. Not a great look, but it is what it is.
- Wear comfortable shoes: Often quoted but also often overlooked. Go for comfort. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so plan accordingly.

Final Thoughts: Why Philadelphia Should Be on You List of Things to Do

Whether you’re a history lover, a foodie, or a pop culture enthusiast, Philadelphia offers something for everyone. With its walkable downtown, rich American history, and iconic landmarks, it’s the perfect destination for a weekend getaway.
