Brooklyn Bridge Walk: Best Times, Photo Spots, and Insider Tips

Few experiences in New York City offer a blend of history, architecture, and stunning views like a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Let’s face it, it’s a bucket list item. This iconic structure, completed in 1883, connects Manhattan to Brooklyn, providing a gateway to the trendy DUMBO neighborhood. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply looking for a unique way to explore NYC, this day trip is a must.

Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge: An Historic Journey

Why the Brooklyn Bridge is Special

  • Designed by John Roebling who died during the build, the reins were taken over by his son Washington Roebling. Unfortunately he got ‘the bends,’ a medical condition due to attendance in the caissons or pylons that hold up the bridge. It was up to daughter-in-law Emily Warren Roebling to finish the job. The Brooklyn Bridge was a groundbreaking feat of engineering in the 19th century.
  • Spanning 1.1 miles, it features Gothic-style towers and a web of cables symbolizing the industrial age’s strength and ingenuity.
  • As the world’s longest suspension bridge when it opened, it remains one of NYC’s most iconic landmarks.

Tips for Your Walk Across the Bridge

  1. Best times to visit: Walk the bridge at sunrise or sunset for stunning views and fewer crowds. Early mornings provide excellent light for photography.
  2. Stay in the pedestrian lane: Keep to the right. Stay in your lane. It’s going to stop you hitting ’00’s of people.
  3. Spot the history: Look for bronze plaques along the way. They share fascinating facts about the bridge’s construction.
  4. Capture the perfect photo: Stop mid-span for breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and East River. Most people will be doing the same.
  5. Walk it. Most people only go half way, take photos and wander back. You can walk across and catch the subway back if so inclined. Walking the bridge and exploring Brooklyn is an experience.

Exploring DUMBO: Brooklyn’s Trendiest Neighborhood

Why Visit DUMBO?

DUMBO, short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a vibrant neighborhood where industrial charm meets modern creativity.

Once a hub of warehouses and factories, DUMBO now boasts art galleries, boutiques, and cobblestone streets framed by stunning waterfront views.

On weekends you can find a flea market under the Manhattan Bridge.

Be aware that the subway trains run over the Manhattan Bridge above you. It is extremely loud. Like two jet aircraft beside you loud. How people live in apartments so close to the line is beyond me.
