Looking for the Perfect Day Trip from Manhattan? Explore Fire Island’s Coastal Charm
Are you craving a break from Manhattan’s fast-paced energy? Fire Island is the ideal escape.
Just over an hour’s drive from the city, this serene coastal paradise offers a refreshing contrast to urban life. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, Fire Island is a fun destination to visit. I visited at the height of Winter, so in Summer, its going to tick some boxes.

Why Visit Fire Island?
Fire Island is renowned for its pristine beaches, rich history, and vibrant communities. While it’s famously beloved by the LGBTQ+ community—including Bravo TV’s Andy Cohen—its charm appeals to all visitors. Even in winter, Fire Island’s windswept landscapes and historical landmarks provide a captivating experience.
Want a sneak peek into Fire Island life? Follow Andy Cohen on Instagram for an insider’s view. Who is Andy Cohen? THE guy who built the Bravo TV channel.
How to Get to Fire Island
Accessing Fire Island involves a scenic drive across two picturesque bridges. In winter, the partially frozen sea beneath creates a breathtaking view.
Important Tip: Parking is only available in designated lots—street parking is prohibited and strictly enforced. Once parked, enjoy a peaceful 15-minute walk through wild reeds to the iconic Fire Island Lighthouse. Is the car park patrolled? Yes it is.

Explore Fire Island’s Historic Lighthouses
The Original Fire Island Lighthouse (1826)

The first Fire Island Lighthouse was built in 1826 for $10,000. At 89 feet tall, it was visible from 14.5 miles at sea but proved ineffective due to its limited height and dim illumination. Many ships still met their fate along the coast. By 1858, the original lighthouse was dismantled to make way for a more powerful beacon.

The original lighthouse was once surrounded by water on three sides. Over time, Fire Island has expanded five miles westward—a rare geological phenomenon!
The Current Fire Island Lighthouse (1858)
Constructed in 1858, the current lighthouse stands an impressive 168 feet tall. Its distinctive black-and-white stripes were added in the 1890s to enhance visibility for mariners. Although decommissioned in 1974, it remains a private navigational aid, continuing to guide ships toward New York Harbor.
Imagine the lighthouse keeper’s daily routine: carrying five-gallon cans of oil up 182 steps to keep the lantern burning from dusk till dawn. The clockworks required rewinding every four hours—a true testament to 19th-century dedication.
Visit the Fire Island Lighthouse Museum
At the base of the lighthouse lies a fascinating museum, where you can dive deeper into Fire Island’s maritime history. For a small fee, you can climb the 182 steps to the top for panoramic views of the coastline.
Friendly and knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to share intriguing stories about the lighthouse’s past and the island’s evolution. For more information on visiting, check out the official Fire Island Lighthouse website.
Discover Fire Island’s Unique Communities
Beyond the lighthouse, Fire Island transforms into a car-free haven, accessible only to residents. Explore charming beachside communities, cozy restaurants, and scenic trails. The island is larger than it appears, so plan your visit to fully experience its laid-back coastal lifestyle.
Plan Your Fire Island Adventure
Whether you’re drawn by its historical allure or its natural beauty, Fire Island offers an unforgettable escape from city life. From the striking lighthouses to the tranquil beaches, there’s something for everyone to enjoy year-round.
I’m already planning my next visit in the summer to bask in the sun and uncover even more hidden gems. Why wait? Pack your bag and experience the magic of Fire Island for yourself!
