Step aboard America's last steam-powered lighthouse tender

Finding something both fascinating and free in New York City is like spotting a unicorn, but the Lilac Museum at Pier 25 is just that. Nestled along the Hudson River, this hidden gem offers a unique maritime experience in a spot frequented mostly by locals. With the vibrant energy of Piers 25 and 26 and just a short stroll from Tribeca, it’s the perfect off-the-beaten-path destination.

America’s history on show

Anchored at Pier 25 in Manhattan, the Lilac isn’t just a historic ship—she’s a living tribute to America’s maritime legacy. Launched in 1933 and decommissioned in 1972, the Lilac spent nearly four decades with the U.S. Coast Guard, maintaining essential navigational aids along the Delaware River and Bay.

Why is a buoy tender so important? Buoys are like floating road signs, guiding cargo ships safely into port—day and night, all year long. In winter, that meant braving icy waters to keep them clear and operational. Without ships like the Lilac, global trade would have literally lost its way. (See the Lilac in action here.)

Today, this steam-powered vessel invites visitors aboard to explore what life was like on one of the nation’s last surviving buoy tenders.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, maritime fan, or just looking for something different to do in New York City, the Lilac offers a rare glimpse into America’s seafaring past, free of charge.

Why the Lilac Mattered

In the 20th century, safe maritime navigation was essential for economic growth. Ports like Philadelphia, Camden, Trenton, and Wilmington relied on marked channels for shipping goods and receiving materials. That’s where buoy tenders like Lilac came in — placing, retrieving, and maintaining vital navigation aids to keep maritime traffic moving safely.

Assigned to the U.S. Lighthouse Service’s 4th District, Lilac ensured that thousands of vessels could safely traverse one of America’s busiest estuaries. She was also tasked with supplying lighthouses and responding to dangerous shipwrecks.

The Only Surviving Steam-Powered Lighthouse Tender in the U.S.

What makes Lilac unique is that she is the only surviving steam-powered lighthouse tender in America. Her twin triple-expansion steam engines once generated 500 horsepower each, driving her through treacherous waters at speeds of up to 11 knots.

Constructed with a riveted steel hull, a technique phased out during World War II, she stands as a testament to an era of rugged, hand-crafted maritime engineering.

The Meaning Behind the Name

Ever wonder why she’s called Lilac? Chances are…no. But U.S. buoy tenders are traditionally named after trees, shrubs, and flowers. The lilac, a flowering shrub known for its resilience and beauty, is a fitting namesake for a ship that endured decades of challenging service.

There is so much to see on this vessel. If you get the opportunity, go below deck to see the steam powered engine. It’s something else. Might is right.
