Why the Whispering Walls are a Delight
The Whispering Gallery is located just outside the Oyster Bar & Restaurant on the lower concourse. It’s a four-arched walkway where sound waves travel along the curved ceiling. If two people stand at diagonally opposite corners, facing the wall, and speak softly, they can hear each other as if they were standing side by side, even over the noise of the terminal.
I’ve heard of people making marriage proposals via the walls, which is actually a pretty cool story. Just make sure the right person hears it, otherwise its an awkward time for all involved!
How the Phenomenon Occurs
The phenomenon is due to sound reflections off the hard, curved tile surfaces designed by Rafael Guastavino, whose signature vaulted ceilings appear throughout New York. The arched design carries sound waves along the curve rather than letting them disperse.

Tips
It isn’t rocket science. You go to the corner, whisper a secret or something interesting and the person diagonally opposite will hear it. It’s fun to stand off and watch tourists doing the same for a few minutes.
If you get the chance, have a look at the Oyster Bar, its old world and very charming.
