A Brief History

The main branch of the New York Public Library opened its doors to the public on May 23, 1911. Located at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, this Beaux-Arts masterpiece was one of the largest marble structures ever constructed in the U.S. at the time. Designed by architects Carrère and Hastings, it took 16 years to complete and remains one of the most iconic public buildings in New York City.

Flanked by its famous stone lions—Patience and Fortitude—the library has become a symbol of resilience and knowledge for over a century. The sculptor that cerated the lions, also created the lionesses outside the entrance to the JP Morgan Library.
