William Seward and the Alaska Purchase: A Visionary New Yorker
Head to Madison Square Park, New York and find yourself a visionary New Yorker and architect of the Alaska Purchase. William H. Seward, a former U.S. Secretary of State and longtime New Yorker, made one of the boldest moves in American history, he bought Alaska. In 1867, Seward negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million, a decision ridiculed at the time as “Seward’s Folly.” Critics saw the vast, frozen wilderness as useless. But history would prove otherwise.
The Deal of a Lifetime

Today, Alaska is rich in natural resources like oil, gas, gold, and fish, contributing billions to the U.S. economy. Seward’s foresight turned what seemed like a gamble into one of the most strategic land acquisitions in U.S. history.
So Why William Seward Scored a Monument
So why is there a statue of Seward in Madison Square Park in New York City? Seward served as Governor of New York and U.S. Senator, before joining President Lincoln’s cabinet. His contributions to both his home state and the nation were monumental. The bronze statue, erected in 1876, was the first to depict a New Yorker in a New York City park, honoring his role as a statesman, abolitionist, and visionary behind the Alaska Purchase.

Final Thoughts
So if you’re heading to Madison Square park, drop by and see the statue. Madison Square park is one of my favorites in New York, clean, fun and just quietly, there is a great dog park there that is quite the scene. Find our more about this great city and the people that have made it so great. Seward’s story is a reminder that bold ideas can change the course of a nation.
