Exploring the Hudson River Area
Looking for a refreshing day trip from NYC? Head north to the Hudson River Valley—less than an hour’s drive from Manhattan—and uncover a mix of nature, history, and Americana. From lakeside strolls and vintage diners to military museums and presidential landmarks, this self-guided road trip packs in unforgettable experiences.
Start with Nature at Bear Mountain State Park
Begin your adventure at Bear Mountain, a serene escape featuring wooded trails, a picturesque lake, and a small zoo housing native animals like black bears and bald eagles.
Rent paddle boats and zoom around Hessian Lake. Not cheap at $10 per per person per 30 minutes, but still enjoyable. There is the Mountain Inn where you can stay for a night or two, as well as an indoor carousel which is always a drawcard for children.
There are plenty of picnic grounds and places to grill, combined with lots of space, makes it an ideal place to spend the day ‘chillin’ and grillin’.
Know before you go
Parking is $10 per vehicle or you can purchase an Empire Park Pass from the National Park’s Service for $80, which gets you free parking for every NYC state park. Most parks charge ~$8+, so it pays for itself quickly.

West Point Visitors Center and Museum
Explore the West Point Visitors Center and its adjacent museum, the oldest and largest military museum in the U.S.
The visitors center is interesting to get an understanding of how and why it exists. It’s very much an infomercial but its worth the look.
The museum, which is free is the business. It’s more than just military equipment, it tells the story of warfare and the people involved, providing a human element. Revolutionary War relics, modern military gear, and learn how the academy has shaped American leadership.

Walkway Over the Hudson
Cross the iconic Walkway Over the Hudson, the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge. Once a 19th-century rail bridge, it now connects Highland and Poughkeepsie with jaw-dropping river views and a fascinating past.
This is a fun walk across, but deceptively long. I walked across with my dog ‘Johnny’ who is not a fan of bridges, requiring me to carry him across and back, much to the polite laughs of passersby.

Know before you go
Parking is $5 but the walk across is free. There are bathrooms and some food trucks just before you walk across the bridge.
You can ride your bike or scooter across at low speed.
Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum
Wrap up your journey in Hyde Park at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Tour FDR’s home, walk through beautifully kept gardens, and visit the gravesites of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt.

Know before you go
Parking is free. Entry to the museum is paid.
You can see the gravesite of FDR, the stables and the exterior of his former home.
